On the coast of Chubut, the rhythmic sound of the sea against the shore sets the pace for a different experience. There, the Sea Refuges invite you to rediscover the Patagonia Azul Provincial Park, a protected area that combines biodiversity, stunning landscapes, and sustainable tourism.
Season and Location
The Nature Tourism 2025–2026 season runs from November 1 to April 15. The refuges are organized into two bases along the Ruta Azul:
- Isla Leones Camps, 12 km south of Camarones.
- Marisma Camps, at the Bahía Bustamante Portal, 90 km further south.
Each camp has six cottages with limited capacity: 12 guests at Isla Leones and 15 at Marisma, plus a kitchen team, guide, and host. The reduced scale is intentional: it aims to preserve the silence and intimacy with the environment.
Accommodation and Gastronomy
The cottages are simple on the outside but comfortable inside: box spring, hotel linens, towels, and hot water. The proposal is all-inclusive: accommodation, meals, and activities.
The cuisine is nourished by local products:
- Artisan bread and fresh herbs.
- Vegetables from the Chispa agroecological garden.
- Artisanal fish from Camarones.
Chef Carola Puracchio (AmarAlgas) brings culinary identity, with three daily meals that reflect the essence of the region.
Activities in Isla Leones and Marisma
The landscape sets the agenda:
- Hiking and e-bikes at Isla Leones.
- Snorkeling with wetsuits.
- Boat trips from Bahía Arredondo to Isla Faro Leones and Caleta Hornos.
In Marisma, the tide organizes the time: natural pools at low tide —an open-air Patagonian aquarium— and floats along the estuary at high tide. Added to this are mountain biking, coastal horseback riding, and a visit to the old house restored as an interpretation center.
Fauna and Biodiversity
The heart of the experience is in the water. The boat trips allow you to observe:
- Four species of whales.
- Sea lions.
- Dolphins and porpoises.
- Coastal birds and unique endemic species of the region.
The Patagonia Azul Park becomes an open classroom to understand marine dynamics and the importance of conserving these ecosystems.
Sustainability and Environmental Care
Commitment to the environment is practiced in every detail:
- Solar panels for clean energy.
- Biodigesters for bathrooms.
- Compost and waste separation sent to the Camarones recycling center.
The proposal is based on minimal environmental footprint and respect for wildlife, with visitor limits ensuring silence and a prudent distance.
Ruta Azul and Access
The Sea Refuges complete the Ruta Azul, alongside Bahía Bustamante Lodge, Caleta Sara, Cabo Raso, Estancia La Antonieta, and the vibrant network of Camarones. The regional economy is strengthened with jobs, purchases from local producers, and tourist services.
Access is supported by three airports: Trelew, Puerto Madryn, and Comodoro Rivadavia. Along the coast, the RP1 (Ruta Azul) accompanies cliffs and bays; the RN3 and RP30 connect with Camarones. The final stretches of firm gravel organize the arrival without haste.
The highest intensity of visits occurs between late November and mid-February, while early November, March, and April offer clear skies and quieter beaches. Advance reservation is mandatory.
The Sea Refuges are more than accommodations: they are a sustainable tourism proposal that allows you to truly know the Patagonia Azul Park. Between walks, navigations, and local gastronomy, the experience invites you to put away the watch and be carried away by the rhythm of the Patagonian sea.
