NORTHFIELD, Vt. – After an incredible week of high-level rugby, cultural experiences, and team bonding, the Norwich University men’s and women’s rugby teams have returned to campus following their international tour of Ireland. The Cadets embraced every aspect of the experience, from intense competition and elite coaching sessions to historic sightseeing and immersion in Irish traditions.
The tour began with a training session led by Connacht Rugby’s coaching staff in Galway, providing Norwich players with valuable insight from one of Ireland’s premier provincial programs. The Cadets then traveled to Limerick, where they faced off against Shannon R.F.C. in their first matches of the trip. The women’s team put in a strong performance, converting a key try, while the men’s team battled hard but fell to a talented Shannon squad.
Following their opening games, the Cadets took time to explore Ireland’s stunning landscapes and rich history. They visited the Cliffs of Moher, taking in breathtaking views of the Atlantic before stepping back in time at Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, where they experienced medieval Irish life firsthand.
Norwich’s next challenge came against the Irish Defence Forces in Kildare, a squad composed of cadets and officers, providing a unique test for the Norwich teams.
The men’s team delivered a gritty defensive effort in the first half, holding the experienced Irish side to just two tries while creating turnover opportunities that, unfortunately, did not translate into points. At halftime, Norwich trailed, 12-0. In the second half, the Irish Defence Forces’ physicality and experience took over, as they added four tries and three conversions to close out a 38-0 victory.
“I am so proud of how we tackled and fought until the very end,” said Head Coach Bob Weggler. “In the end, it was their age and physicality that beat us, but our Cadets showed incredible heart. We are so grateful for the Irish Defence Forces’ hospitality and sportsmanship. It was an honor to hear both countries’ national anthems before the match.”
The women’s team also delivered a strong performance, competing well against a formidable Irish Defence Forces squad in a 42-17 defeat. One of the tour’s highlights came when Siobhan O’Donnell (Queens, N.Y.) broke through for a try, showcasing Norwich’s attacking skill and determination on the international stage.
Beyond their rugby matches, the Cadets had the chance to step outside their comfort zone and take part in a uniquely Irish sporting tradition in the Gaelic games. During their visit to Experience Gaelic Games in Dublin, the team was introduced to the fundamentals of Gaelic football and hurling, two of Ireland’s most celebrated sports.
Under the guidance of expert coaches, players quickly adapted to the fast-paced nature of Gaelic football, which combines elements of soccer, rugby, and basketball into a dynamic and skill-driven game. The Cadets learned the intricacies of passing, kicking, and scoring, gaining an appreciation for the agility and endurance required to succeed in the sport.
Hurling, often referred to as the fastest field sport in the world, presented a new challenge as players learned how to maneuver a sliotar (ball) using a hurley (wooden stick). The team embraced the physicality and precision required for hurling, creating an afternoon filled with competition and laughter. This immersive experience not only provided a fun break from rugby but also deepened the Cadets’ connection to Irish athletic culture.
The Cadets also made the most of their final days in Ireland, taking time to explore the sights, history, and traditions that make the country so unique. With Dublin as their final stop, players spent time exploring the vibrant capital city, visiting historical landmarks, bustling streets, and local eateries. Several players joined watch parties across Dublin for the historic Ireland vs. France Six Nations match, experiencing the electric atmosphere of rugby fandom in Ireland firsthand.
With the sevens season on the horizon, this tour has been a transformational experience for both the men’s and women’s teams, sharpening their skills and reinforcing their team culture. Norwich Rugby is grateful to Irish Rugby Tours, the Norwich University Scrum Alums, and all supporters who made this incredible trip possible.
